Kameror som övervakar glädje! Det japanska styrnings- och övervakningsteknikföretaget OMRON har lanserat en ny teknik för mobiltelefoner och fasta kameror som känner igen ansikten och mäter kvalitén på leenden. Tekniken föreslås användas i butiker för att se till att personalen alltid bemöter kunderna på bästa sätt, hela tiden, helt automatiskt.
Men möjligheterna med tekniken slutar inte där! Masato Kawade, senior manager vid OMRONs Sensing & Control Laboratory förklarar:
“Imagine a camera that makes sure you don’t miss that moment when everyone is smiling at their best. Or what about a ‘smile-checker’ for people working in the service industry? The software could be used equally effectively by mental healthcare professionals as a means of tracking patients’ mental condition, and in market research to gauge consumer responses to new products.”
Kawade berättar mer om hur tekniken fungerar:
“The software measures’ how much a subject is smiling and outputs a ‘smile factor’ on a scale of 0 to 100% 3D face mapping technology ensures accurate smile detection and measurement even if the subject is not looking directly at the camera, something which other technologies on the market have not always been able to do, and which opens up avenues for applications in mobile devices.
The software is capable of processing multiple faces at one time. Processing speed is less than a tenth of a second (0.044 seconds to be precise, using a Pentium 4 pc with. 3.2GHz processing speed). At 46Kb, the program is small enough to be embedded on an IC chip for mobile apps.
Applications we envisage are:
- Digital cameras (for taking pictures when the subject’s smiling).
- My personal favorite: a ‘smile checker’ for people working in the service industry.
- In human-robot communication interfaces
- New product testing by food manufacturers - as a means of checking, for example, whether low calorie alternatives give the same pleasure kicks as higher calorie originals etc.
Systemet har redan införts i det japanska järnvägsnätet där personalen får varningar om de inte sköter sig, på lastbilsdepåer för att se hur trötta förarna är men även på sjukhus för att försäkra sig om bästa möjliga patientbemötande. Le – och livet ler mot dig! Eller som OMRON själva formulerar det: OMRON’s sensing and control technology brings machines closer to people.
